Getting up and along

Mutianyu: cable car, toboggan and how much walking

How you get onto the wall, back down, and what the walking is really like.

Getting up to the wall

At Mutianyu you don't have to climb steeply to reach the wall — a cable car and a chairlift carry you up from the base to the ramparts, saving your legs for the wall itself. There's also the option to walk up for those who want the exercise. The uphill lifts are one of the main reasons Mutianyu is so accessible and popular with a wide range of visitors.

The toboggan down

Mutianyu's signature feature is the toboggan — a metal-track slide that runs from the wall back down through the forest, which you ride on a small wheeled sledge at your own pace. It's genuinely fun, a hit with families and kids, and a memorable way to finish your time on the wall. You can also simply take the cable car or chairlift back down if you prefer.

Walking the wall itself

Once you're up, the wall undulates along the ridge with plenty of steps, slopes and watchtowers to explore. It's more strenuous than it looks in places — the Wall was built to follow the terrain, so there are steep sections — but you can walk as much or as little as you like, going tower to tower and turning back whenever you wish. That flexibility suits all fitness levels.

Planning your time up top

A typical Mutianyu visit gives you a couple of hours on the wall, enough to walk a good stretch, climb a few towers, take in the views and get your photos. If you're keen, you can cover more of the restored section; if you'd rather take it gently, a shorter walk between towers still delivers the grandeur. Allowing unhurried time up top is the key to enjoying it.

Making it easy

The combination of cable car up, toboggan or lift down, and a walkable restored wall in between is exactly what makes Mutianyu so manageable. You can tailor the effort to your group, skip the hardest climbs, and still stand on a magnificent stretch of the Great Wall. For a first visit, that ease — without sacrificing the scenery — is a big part of the appeal.
